A large greenish-grey unicornfish with a short bony horn projecting from its forehead and a pair of bright blue, knife-edged plates at the tail base. It is one of the biggest and most prized food surgeonfishes of the Red Sea.

It is harvested across its range partly by night spearfishing, when the daytime-active fish sleep tucked into the reef.
