A large herbivorous sea turtle with a smooth, often mottled brown-green shell, named for the greenish fat beneath its skin. It is the most commonly seen turtle in Egypt's Red Sea, grazing seagrass and nesting on offshore islands such as Zabargad.
This is a protected or non-target species — please don't fish for it. If it's accidentally hooked, release it quickly and unharmed.
Eating & safety
Look but do not touch or ride; harassing or capturing sea turtles is illegal in Egypt.
Best conditions: Calm shallow seagrass areas where turtles surface to breathe between grazing
Green turtles often return to nest on the very same beach where they themselves hatched decades earlier.
