A large baleen whale celebrated for its enormous wing-like pectoral fins, breaching displays and complex songs. It is a rare visitor to the Egyptian Red Sea, linked to the unique non-migratory Arabian Sea humpback population.
This is a protected or non-target species — please don't fish for it. If it's accidentally hooked, release it quickly and unharmed.
Eating & safety
Extremely rare in Egypt; observe only and never approach a surfacing whale.
Best conditions: Calm offshore seas during the rare winter sightings
The Arabian Sea humpbacks are the only humpback population on Earth that does not undertake long migrations, staying in warm waters year-round.
