A sturdy sea turtle with a notably large head and powerful jaws built for crushing hard-shelled prey like crabs and mollusks. In Egypt it occurs in both the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, where it nests in small numbers along the North Sinai coast.
This is a protected or non-target species — please don't fish for it. If it's accidentally hooked, release it quickly and unharmed.
Eating & safety
Avoid nesting beaches at night and never use lights near nesting females or hatchlings.
Best conditions: Calm coastal water; nesting on quiet sandy Mediterranean beaches in summer
