A heavy-bodied coastal shark with a notably tall, triangular first dorsal fin set far forward on the back. It frequents sandy bottoms and reef edges in both the Egyptian Red Sea and Mediterranean, generally keeping to deeper coastal waters.

Rarely aggressive toward people, but its size warrants respect; it is a vulnerable species best left unfished.
