A slender, acrobatic dolphin famous for leaping clear of the water and spinning on its long axis up to seven times in a single jump. Egypt's most reliably seen Red Sea dolphin, it rests by day in sheltered reef lagoons such as Sataya ('Dolphin House') and Samadai near Marsa Alam.
This is a protected or non-target species — please don't fish for it. If it's accidentally hooked, release it quickly and unharmed.
Eating & safety
Observe only and keep distance; harassing resting pods is illegal and disrupts their critical daytime rest.
Best conditions: Calm mornings in protected lagoons when pods enter to rest after night feeding
It is the only dolphin that habitually spins on its longitudinal axis in mid-air, possibly to shed parasites or signal pod-mates.
