Light spinning from shore or a dinghy is the most versatile and accessible way to fish the Red Sea. A medium spinning rod with lures or light bait covers Barracuda, Bluefin Trevally, small GT, Bonito, and more. Shore fishing from coral rock edges, jetties, and beaches is productive especially at dawn and dusk.

How it works

Lures (spoons, soft plastics, small plugs) are cast out and retrieved at varying speeds, depths, and actions. The angler covers water methodically, changing lure and retrieve speed until a productive pattern is found. Shore spinning at dawn with a metal spoon is one of the most reliable Red Sea methods.

Step by step

  1. 1Arrive at dawn โ€” the first hour of light is the most productive
  2. 2Scout the spot: look for current, bait activity, reef edges, rock points
  3. 3Start with a metal spoon โ€” cast as far as possible, retrieve medium-fast
  4. 4Work different depths: fast retrieve keeps lure shallow, slow retrieve goes deep
  5. 5If no action in 15 minutes, change lure type or colour
  6. 6On a strike: set the hook with a firm sweep โ€” don't hesitate
  7. 7Play the fish out from sharp reef edges โ€” steer it to open water

Pro tips

  • โ†’Rocky points and headlands where current meets reef are prime shore spots
  • โ†’Barracuda love silver and chrome at medium to fast retrieves
  • โ†’Small GT and Bluefin Trevally hit poppers and stickbaits near the reef edge at dawn
  • โ†’Wade carefully on reef โ€” wetsuit booties and polarized sunglasses are essential
  • โ†’Tide changes concentrate feeding โ€” fish the hour either side of high and low tide
