What the fishing is like

The Nile is the most accessible fishing in Egypt and the water most Egyptians actually learn on. It is fished from the bank — corniches, islands, canal mouths and barrages — and from small boats, with float and bottom tackle doing most of the work.

Nile tilapia (bolti) is the staple, alongside African catfish (karmout), bayad and, in the southern reaches, Nile perch. Fayoum's Lake Qarun adds a brackish lake fishery to the mix.

Freshwater follows separate rules from the Red Sea. Local requirements, closed seasons on the northern lakes, protected stretches and gear restrictions still vary by governorate.
