What the fishing is like
Marsa Alam sits roughly 270 km south of Hurghada, and the difference shows in the water. The coast is less built up, the reefs start closer in, and the run to open water is shorter. It is the practical base for the southern offshore grounds.
Because the drop-off is near, the same trip can cover reef edges and true bluewater. Trolling and popping take sailfish, tuna and trevally offshore; spinning and fly work the marsa mouths and shallow flats inshore.
This is also the most protected stretch of Egyptian coast. Wadi El Gemal National Park covers the shore and islands south of the town, and Elphinstone sits inside the offshore marine park — restricted, permit-only ground that is fished around, not in.
